Six Simple Ways To Get Out Of A Bad Mood

When you’re having problems and things are not going your way, it’s normal to feel irritated and find yourself in a bad mood. However, getting yourself out of that mindset does not to have to be difficult. Here are six simple ways to shake off your grumpy mood and feel better, almost instantly.

1. Music
Playing upbeat music that you enjoy, or songs that make you think of a special moment really can take you somewhere else. That’s because music triggers memories and feelings that take us to another mind space. A really good idea is to compile a playlist when you’re in a great mood and have that on stand by for when your spirit needs a little lift. This way, you have some songs compiled that you ~know~ make you feel great.

2. Exercise
Not only does exercising cause our bodies to release those “feel good” hormones called endorphins (say it with us – “exercise gives you endorphins, endorphins make you happy!”), it also allows you to concentrate on what your body is doing and not what your mind is thinking. I know that when I come back from a run, I always feel centered and calm. If running is not your thing, just lace up your sneakers and go for a walk. In just 20 minutes of being outside and breathing in some fresh air, you’ll be able to get your smile back.

3. Talk to a friend.
This works. Every. Time. Connecting with a friend is great because it allows you feel “heard” from someone who is close to you and really knows you. Also, being around others gets us out of our own head which puts a pause in the negative tape we have playing and replaying in our head. After you share what’s bothering you, the conversation will probably migrate to other topics which will help to lighten your mood as well.

4. Watch a funny movie.
Even if you don’t love comedies, choose a genre of movie you do enjoy that engages you enough to stop the conversation in your head and get caught up in the plot. Personally, I love a good romcom like When Harry Met Sally. It always leaves me giggling.

5. Give in to your mood.
It may sound counter-intuitive but, sometimes allowing ourselves to fully FEEL our feelings without judgement can be so cathartic and will help put the period at the end of the sentence in our funk. A good cry really can prove to be healing.

6. Do something for someone else.

I know what you’re thinking: “Wait, what? It’s me who’s feeling bad right now,” right? Shifting your focus from how badly you feel to how great you just made someone else feel will result in a change in your mood. It’s normal to feel sad from time to time. It is part of life’s ebbs and flows.
